Manuel Silva, Catedrático de Ingeniería de Sistemas y Automática en la Escuela de Ingeniería y Arquitectura de la Universidad de Zaragoza desde 1981, miembro del Instituto de Investigación en Ingeniería de Aragón (I3A) y del Departamento de Informática e Ingeniería de Sistemas (DIIS), nos ha dejado el 28 de noviembre de 2022.

Manuel se incorporó a la Universidad de Zaragoza en septiembre de 1978 tras finalizar su doctorado en el Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (Francia). Fue profesor agregado y fundador del Departamento de Control Automático (1978), hoy transformado en el Departamento de Informática e Ingeniería de Sistemas. Sus intereses de investigación están relacionados con los Sistemas de Eventos Discretos siendo bien conocido por sus contribuciones sobre el análisis estructural de las redes de Petri en todo el mundo. Introductor del paradigma formal de las redes de Petri en España es autor del libro pionero “Las Redes de Petri: en la Automática y la Informática” (Editorial AC, 1985). Co-autor del libro Practice of Petri Nets in Manufacturing (Chapman and Hall, 1993) y coeditor del Control of discrete event systems. Perspectives of automata and Petri nets (Springer, 2012). Pionero en robótica en España, fue impulsor y director técnico de ROBOTICA, la Feria de Robótica (FNOM de Zaragoza, 1984-1989), y coeditor del libro Inteligencia Artificial y Robótica Industrial (Publicaciones de la Universidad de Zaragoza, 1985).

• Decano de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial (1987-89), y del Centro Politécnico Superior (1989-93).

• Presidente de la CONAI (Consejo Aragonés de Investigación, 1993-95) y de la Comisión de Investigación e Innovación de la Comisión de Trabajo de los Pirineos (1994-95).

Manuel Silva, Full Professor of Systems Engineering and Automation at the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Zaragoza since 1981, member of the Engineering Research Institute of Aragon (I3A) and the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering (DIIS), has left us on November 28, 2022.

Manuel joined University of Zaragoza in September 1978 after finishing his PhD in Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (France). He was aggregated professor and founder of the Department on Automatic Control (1978), today transformed into the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering, becoming full professor in January 1983. His research interests are related to the Discrete Event Systems being well known for his contributions on structural analysis of Petri nets in all over the world. Introducer of the formal paradigm of Petri nets in Spain authored the pioneering book Las Redes de Petri: en la Automática y la Informática (Editorial AC, 1985). Co-author of Practice of Petri Nets in Manufacturing. (Chapman and Hall, 1993) and co-editor of Control of discrete event systems. Perspectives of automata and Petri nets (Springer, 2012). Pioneers in robotics in Spain, was promoter and technical responsible of ROBOTICA, the Int.Fair of Robotics (FNOM de Zaragoza, 1984-1989), and co-editor of the book Inteligencia Artificial y Robótica Industrial (Publicaciones de la Universidad de Zaragoza, 1985).

Set to become the world’s second-tallest clock tower (after the Makkah Clock Royal Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia), Aeternitas Tower is the result of a partnership between Dubai-based real estate developer London Gate and Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Franck Muller.

London Gate purchased the plot of land in Dubai Marina, which already had the beginnings of an unfinished 106-story structure — and knew that the tower’s monumental size needed a striking facade, said Tom Hill, media relations coordinator for the developer.

“We believe the clock will be seen from six kilometers away because of the sheer height of the building,” said Hill, adding that the clock face will be an enormous 40 meters (131 feet) tall and 30 meters (98 feet) wide.

“We wanted to do something different that hasn’t been done before in Dubai,” said Hill.

In a country best known for its soaring skyscrapers, modern architecture and sprawling desert, wildlife isn’t always what comes to mind when people think of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). But Dubai-based photographer Anish Karingattil is determined to change that.

Originally from India, Karingattil moved to Dubai 17 years ago and began photographing wildlife shortly after, specializing in macro photography, using extreme close ups. Highlights of his stunning portfolio of images, taken across the seven Emirates, include a scorpion with her babies, an Arabian horned viper hiding in the desert sand, and two black and yellow mud daubers covered in dew drops.

“Photographers get to tell a story through images,” Karingattil says. “Macro photography allows me to see life and the world around me in a brand-new way.”

Despite its hot climate and harsh desert, the UAE is home to over 1,000 plant and animal species. The waters around the country are home to the largest concentration of Indian Ocean humpbacks dolphin in the world, and the second-largest population of dugongs, after Australia.

With the UAE’s president recently extending the country’s “Year of Sustainability” into 2024, Karingattil uses wildlife photography as a method of capturing the country’s biodiversity and sharing it with others.

While interior design is his full-time job, “herping” is his passion. “Herping is the act of observing, studying, and photographing reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitats,” says Karingattil. “It is a popular hobby among nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers who are fascinated by the diversity and beauty of these creatures.”

Emmanuel Rondeau has photographed tigers across Asia for the past decade, from the remotest recesses of Siberia to the pristine valleys of Bhutan. But when he set out to photograph the tigers in the ancient rainforests of Malaysia, he had his doubts.

“We were really not sure that this was going to work,” says the French wildlife photographer. That’s because the country has just 150 tigers left, hidden across tens of thousands of square kilometers of dense rainforest.

“Tiger numbers in Malaysia have been going down, down, down, at an alarming rate,” says Rondeau. In the 1950s, Malaysia had around 3,000 tigers, but a combination of habitat loss, a decline in prey, and poaching decimated the population. By 2010, there were just 500 left, according to WWF, and the number has continued to fall.

The Malayan tiger is a subspecies native to Peninsular Malaysia, and it’s the smallest of the tiger subspecies in Southeast Asia.

“We are in this moment where, if things suddenly go bad, in five years the Malayan tiger could be a figure of the past, and it goes into the history books,” Rondeau adds.

Determined not to let that happen, Rondeau joined forces with WWF-Malaysia last year to profile the elusive big cat and put a face to the nation’s conservation work.

It took 12 weeks of preparations, eight cameras, 300 pounds of equipment, five months of patient photography and countless miles trekked through the 117,500-hectare Royal Belum State Park… but finally, in November, Rondeau got the shot that he hopes can inspire the next generation of conservationists.

Как известно, главная трудность молодых перспективных кадров – это отсутствие жилья и сложность его приобретения. По мнению Романа Викторовича необходимо дать возможность людям заработать на приобретение жилья, чтобы устранить главную причину миграции кадров. Ярославском Высшем Военном Финансовом Училище, он на рубеже XXI века принял решение совершенствоваться в профессии – продолжить обучение в области экономики и финансов на международных курсах. В конце декабря в Москве по инициативе депутатов Государственной думы Сергея Крючка и Олега Нилова прошел круглый стол о перспективах жилищной кооперации для решения жилищной проблемы в России. Большой интерес вызвала модель жилищных кооперативов, обходящегося без государственной поддержки и подразумевающая покупку только готового, а не строящегося жилья.

Депутат Государственной думы Олег Нилов подчеркнул, что кооперативы существовали еще в советские времена, это позитивный опыт, который нуждается в государственной поддержке — ведь это способ беспроцентной покупки объектов недвижимости вскладчину. — Опыт Германии свидетельствует о том, что он очень эффективен, — заявил депутат Государственной думы Сергей Крючек, — Там очень большой объем жилья приобретается за счет кооперативного финансирования, а не ипотеки. Это альтернативный источник финансирования решения жилищного вопроса.
Присутствовавший на круглом столе практик жилищной кооперации — председатель правления жилищного кооператива "Бест Вей" Роман Василенко подчеркнул, что возглавляемый им кооператив как раз является примером решения квартирного вопроса без государственного финансирования и при этом с минимальной переплатой.

— Квартира, приобретенная кооперативом, обойдется существенно дешевле ипотечной. Переплата, связана с внесением вступительного и членских взносов, по наиболее типичным квартирам — стоимостью 3,5-4 млн рублей, составит примерно 10-15%.

По его словам, жилищная кооперация в России имеет давнюю историю. Дореволюционная Россия была первой в мире по числу кооперативов в мире. Жилищные кооперативы были распространены и в советское время. В пореформенный период был избран американской путь — акцент на ипотеку. Но он себя не оправдал — так как ипотеку получить довольно тяжело и число нуждающихся в качественном жилье сокращается медленно.

Кооперативное же финансирование получить, наоборот, легко. Нет таких требований, как хорошая кредитная история, не требуется подтвержденный доход.

Что касается возрастных ограничений, то пайщику должно исполниться 16 лет, верхних ограничений для вступления в кооператив нет. Залоговой частью выступает сама квартира: пока пайщик полностью не рассчитается с кооперативом, она находится в собственности кооператива, то есть в собственности всех пайщиков. Как только пайщик рассчитался с кооперативом, он получает право регистрации перехода права собственности на квартиру.

SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew is home, capping off a five-day mission to orbit — which included the world’s first commercial spacewalk — by splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Crew Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts landed off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, at 3:37 a.m. ET Sunday.
The Polaris Dawn mission made history as it reached a higher altitude than any human has traveled in five decades. A spacewalk conducted early Thursday morning also marked the first time such an endeavor has been completed by a privately funded and operated mission.

But returning to Earth is among the most dangerous stretches of any space mission.

To safely reach home, the Crew Dragon capsule carried out what’s called a “de-orbit burn,” orienting itself as it prepared to slice through the thickest part of Earth’s atmosphere.
The spacecraft then reached extremely hot temperatures — up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,900 degrees Celsius) — because of the pressure and friction caused by hitting the air while still traveling around 17,000 miles per hour (27,000 kilometers per hour). The crew, however, should have remained at comfortable temperatures, protected by the Crew Dragon’s heat shield, which is located on the bottom of the 13-foot-wide (4-meter-wide) capsule.

Dragging against the air began to slow the vehicle down before the Crew Dragon deployed parachutes that further decelerated its descent.
